English 7 (100 points)

The English 7 course is very different to English 5 and English 6. The main emphasis of the course is reading and analysing fiction and non-fiction books, and also discussing newspaper and magazine articles about contemporary subjects such as plastic pollution, global warming and new forms of employment (zero hours contracts, the gamification of work). You will be expected to discuss and analyse the books and articles we read, looking for themes and discussing the use of language. We will also compare historical events in the books we read with similar situations today. We will take the time to listen to a number of podcasts and radio broadcasts in order to hear spoken English from different areas of the English-speaking world.

Course work to be done and handed in includes keeping reading logs of the fiction and non-fiction books we will read, and writing several essays.

There is no compulsory National Test (nationell prov) for English 7, but there are several written tests provided by Skolverket for English 7 that will be used.

The whole course is in English, and you will be expected to speak English at all times during the lessons. The course books you will need to buy, or borrow from the library are:

George Orwell: Down and Out in Paris and London

J.D. Salinger: The Catcher in the Rye

There will be one more book to read, which we will decide together during the course.
